Images from the Shell Grotto installation of ‘Formosa’ - a new piece commissioned by Crate, Margate, curated by Matthew De Pulford, part of Bad Translation. The piece consisted of sound-reactive visuals triggered by computer data cassettes pulled from Commodore Datasettes by electric motors. The piece drew on the history of séances held at the grotto, the use of technology to record the ‘dead’ through Electronic Voice Phenomenon, and the redundancy of obsolete computer systems and cassette data storage.
